What Is the CDHO?
The CDHO stands for College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. It is a regulatory body for dental hygiene in Ontario that sets a quality standard for the field in the interest of public health. Registering with the CDHO allows you to legally identify as a dental hygienist after extensive training. Before registering, aspiring dental hygienists must fulfill some educational requirements, including:
- Successful completion of a dental hygiene program equivalent to a full-time program of two years. It must, at the time of the applicant’s graduation, be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada or by the American Dental Association
- The applicant must hold a certificate issued by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board or complete the written competency evaluation set or approved by the Registration Committee.
- The applicant must have completed a clinical competency evaluation set or approved by the Registration Committee unless the applicant has completed a program referred to in paragraph 1

What Is the Registration Process for Students in Restorative Dental Hygienist Training
CDHO registration involves the following steps:
- Apply for the NDHCB exam and pay registration fees
- Prepare for the exam
- Pass the NDHCB exam
- Review the CDHO New Graduate Guide
- Set up your CDHO account
- Pay your application fee
- Take your jurisprudence exam
- Complete CDHO registration and update your profile
- Review the CDHO Registrants Handbook
- Login to your CDHO account to get your Professional Liability insurance certificate
- Wait for the CDHO registration confirmation
- Receive your CDHO registration number and welcome package
Once you’ve completed the process, you’ll be ready to work in the field or pursue various dental hygienist training programs to help you advance your career.
