On any given day a client seen by the dental hygienist has the potential of experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency. All dental hygiene practitioners should be aware of potential risks that a client may present, take steps to prevent life-threatening events from occurring, and plan for problems in advance of their happening. Dental hygienists carry an ethical, moral, legal, and professional obligation owed to clients and are expected to know and understand the etiology, signs, symptoms and treatment for each emergency.A Further the dental hygienist must know and understand emergency prevention and preparedness by highlighting the importance of the medical history, vital signs and the development of an emergency kit to be accessible when practicing as a dental hygienist, should the need arise. Knowing a clientas medical history and monitoring the vital signs well are elements that should never be overlooked and are the key to the prevention of an emergency during dental hygiene treatment!
