Itas the time of the year when people begin to enjoy the outdoors, possibly being more active in outdoor sports such as soccer, field hockey, baseball. As always, whether partaking in spring/summer or fall/winter sports, protecting your teeth is paramount! Wearing a properly fitted mouth guard can prevent oral injuries. An article published in the magazine Oral Hygiene (May 2013) states that , a?according to the American Association of Orthodontists, 33 percent of parents say their child has sustained an injury during an organized sporta?. This is reason enough to make sure the mouths of children (and adults) are protected when involved in sports.
Though mouth guards can be prepared at home by purchasing kits at a pharmacy, boiling the plastic and biting into it, protection is limited. The fit is not perfect in these types of mouth guards. Having a mouth guard professionally made allows for a customized fit, since impressions of the upper and lower teeth are first taken, from which a mouth guard is then created.
CADH operates mouth guard clinics where custom-fitted mouth guards are made for clients by dental hygiene students. You can call CADH at 905-278-2794 to find out when the next mouth guard clinic will be held. Make sure you Speak to your dental hygienist about having your teeth protecteda.they need to last you a lifetime!
